On Monday we had our first and hopefully last trip to the ER. The call to the lab came around noon, and the news was that little man fell of a play structure and his arm seemed to be swelling. Mary and I ran out of lab and hurried to the Montessori school. When we arrived he was sobbing in the head teacher's lap. We scooped him up and took him to the ER and checked in (1:30 pm). The first nurse that looked at him said she was pretty sure he had a broken humerus. Had to go through a couple of sets of X-rays before they got it right and had a definitive diagnosis. This took oh, about 5 hours. During this time he did not nap much and was not allowed to eat in case he had to go to surgery. Finally, at 7:00 pm it was time to splint the arm. Poor kid had a small nap, no food and only one shot of tylenol before they splinted the arm, and there was some serious screaming. Before that he hardly made a peep, even when they moved his arm for X-rays. Finally, at 9 pm we were out of the ER with kid doped up on meds. He actually slept through the night and did not seem to bothered. The next day he went to see the pediatric ortho doctor and got the splint taken off and the full cast put on. No tears at all during this process, which I thought was pretty impressive, since again he had not eaten because of the possibility of surgery. He seems to be taking it all pretty well and is back to his old self already.
